History of MCW

In 1873, a group of five music-loving women began meeting informally to play and sing for each other in what became known as “The Amateur Musical Club”. Through phenomenal growth in membership and musical activity, the Amateur Musical Club presented concerts by some of the greatest artists of the period: Jan Paderewski, José Iturbi, Alexander Scriabin, Dame Myra Hess, Edward MacDowell, and the noted American violinist Maud Powell, to mention a few.

The spirit of philanthropy and of supporting women musicians began in 1893, with benefit concert proceeds being used to establish a music scholarship for young women. This has grown over the years, and annually, MCW offers scholarships and awards to support talented young women in the highly competitive field of classical music.

Musicians Club of Women welcomes all women who love and appreciate classical music and the company of those who share their passion.

PAUL HARVEY, JR.

Paul Harvey Jr.—concert pianist, radio host and broadcaster, and writer for The Rest of the Story—is an inductee into the National Radio Hall of Fame.  Annually, Mr. Harvey funds two MCW Scholarships in the category of Voice—The Lynne Cooper Harvey Foundation Scholarship and The Lynne Harvey Foundation Scholarship, in honor of her sister, Virginia Cooper Maier—a part of his extensive philanthropic interests.
